Three American cellists in their 50s took the stage for an extraordinary performance of the triple cello concerto (Concerto Grosso No. 1) by the renowned Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki. The event occurred at the Kennedy Center, with the National Symphony Orchestra under the baton of its Music Director, Christoph Eschenbach April 30, 2015. The uniqueness of this performance is further heightened by the fact that all three cellists were veterans of the NSO, each with 30 years of service, having been hired by the legendary Mstislav Rostropovich.
The performance with a major orchestra with 3 members of the cello section was truly a stunning achievement. Consider the rarity of triple cello concertos—none come to mind. I was positioned closest to the Maestro on the cello podium, with my colleagues seated to my right on adjacent podiums. Initially, the distance from the ensemble was somewhat disconcerting, but we quickly adapted to the setup as time was of the essence.
With the generosity and support of Maestro Eschenbach, we dedicated ourselves to this piece for many months leading up to the performance. The work is intricate and long at 35 minutes.
This marvelous work not only showcases the virtuosity and beauty of the cellists but also highlights the orchestra's prowess at various moments throughout the performance.
