David is a Professor in the Department of Educational Foundations, at Montclair State University. He does research in the Philosophy of Childhood, Philosophy for Children, Educational Theory, and Philosophy of Schooling. He did his doctoral work at the University of Kentucky, earning a Doctorate in Education. in Social and Philosophical Studies in Education, in 1986. His thesis was "Young Children's Thinking: An Interpretation from Phenomenology." Professor Kennedy did his master’s degree at Eastern Montana University in Early Childhood Education, in 1978 where he was a Teacher Corps Graduate Fellow. He his Bachelor of Arts at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa majoring in Elementary Education, in 1977. He also did a two-year undergraduate study in literature and anthropology at Columbia University,

David Kennedy is a Professor and former Chair of Educational Foundations at the College of Education and Human Services, Montclair State University since 1996. He has held Visiting professorships at the Faculty of Education, University of Brasilia, Brazil where he co-taught two courses in the philosophy of childhood, co-supervised student research, and delivered two public lectures. May-July 2000. He was also involved with the Faculty of Education, University of Brasilia, Brazil. “Filosofia e Infancia II” where he delivered workshops, did consultations, and delivered an open lecture for students involved in the Philosophy in Schools Project. November 24-30, 1999.

David Kennedy was also a member of the Faculty of Philosophy at the Universidad Iberoamerica, Mexico City, Mexico where he taught a short doctoral course, entitled "The Hermeneutics of Childhood.” June 1995 and June 1996. David was also a member of the Faculty of Early Childhood Studies, Bennington College, Bennington, VT where he taught a practicum course in early childhood education, and developed and taught the course The Young Child in the Western Imagination. Fall 1988.

David was for two years the co-editor of Analytic Teaching: The Community of Inquiry Journal. He is currently a Member of the Editorial Board of Analytic Teaching and Philosophical Praxis. He is currently co-editor of Childhood and Philosophy.
David is a widely published author of many articles and several important books including Changing Conception of the Child from the Renaissance to Post-Modernity: A Philosophy of Childhood. New York NY Edwin Mellon, The Well of Being: Childhood, Subjectivity, and Education. State University of New York Press 2012 and a philosophical Novel called My Name is Myshkin (2012) and Dreamers: Adventures in Dreams and Dreams of Adventure …(2023).
