The Battle of Zama, fought in 202 BC in North Africa, ended the Second Punic War and marked Rome’s decisive victory over Carthage. Roman forces under Scipio Africanus faced Hannibal in a rare head-to-head confrontation after years of Hannibal campaigning in Italy. Scipio neutralized Hannibal’s war elephants by opening lanes in his infantry and using trumpets and noise to panic the animals. The battle ultimately turned on cavalry: Roman and Numidian horsemen defeated Carthage’s cavalry and returned to strike Hannibal’s veteran infantry from the rear. Hannibal was defeated, Carthage was forced to sue for peace, and Rome emerged as the dominant power of the western Mediterranean.
I crossed the sea where your gods went silent
Ash on the wind, your empire bending
You burned my land, I learned your fire
Now Africa answers to Roman steel
I watched you carve your legend in Italy
Blood on the Alps, ghosts at Cannae
But fate is a blade that turns in the hand
And now, Hannibal, you stand on my ground
I am the lesson you never learned
I am the end of your long war
Hear the horns — the beasts turn away
Your terror breaks on ordered lines
March them through the lanes
Let the thunder pass
Trumpets scream — panic blooms
Your monsters trample you at last
Steel breath steady
Shields unbroken
Discipline over fear
Rome does not run
Your veterans lock shields, last and proud
But the earth trembles behind your ranks
Numidian hooves, a circling storm
History strikes you from the rear
I did not chase glory
I studied defeat
I shaped your chaos
Into your grave
Africa sees it
The dust settles red
The war you carried
Dies here instead
Kneel not to me
Kneel to the truth
Empires fall
When Rome learns how
I am Scipio
Breaker of elephants
Ender of wars
You wrote the legend
I closed the book
From Cannae to Zama
The debt is paid
Rome stands eternal
Carthage is made dust
