The Battle of Stamford Bridge was fought on September 25, 1066, in northern England and marked a decisive victory for the English king Harold Godwinson over the Norwegian king Harald Hardrada. Caught by surprise after believing the English army was far away, the Norse forces were unarmored and scattered when Harold’s army arrived. After a fierce struggle, including a desperate stand by Norse warriors at the bridge itself, the Vikings were overwhelmed. Hardrada and Harold’s brother Tostig were killed, effectively ending the Viking attempt to conquer England, though the English victory left Harold’s army exhausted just days before the Norman invasion at Hastings.
Cold river screaming beneath iron boots
Sky split open by English horns
We laughed at armor left on the ships
Till fate came running with Saxon feet
One bridge. One stand.
Steel decides the day.
Axes high — let the river drink
Wooden shields crack like bone
We are the storm they must cross
We are the wall they must break
I stand alone on the narrow spine
No shield but fury, no step back
Each swing a sentence, each cut a name
The bridge is mine — paid in blood
Axeblade singing
Neck and helm torn wide
They come in waves
They die in lines
Hear the river choke on bodies
Hear Valhalla call us home
If this is the end, let it echo
With splintered shields and shattered thrones
They stab from below like cowards in mud
Cold steel through ribs, the world goes dark
I fall laughing into the flood
My axe still thirsty, my oath fulfilled
Behind CAMPS burn
The shieldwall bends
Hardrada bleeds
But does not kneel
We came for crowns
We found the end
No mail, no mercy
Only axes and men
Remember us where the river bends
Where one held many, and many fell
If England stands, it stands on bones
Cracked by Norse steel at Stamford Bridge
Axes down
Eyes to the sky
Sing our names
We die unbroken
