Nick Wrack and Janet Sillett look at the key issue of the state and how to approach it, in the context of the wide support that has developed around the YourParty project of Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana.
They argue that the Marxist approach to socialism and the existing state is completely different from the 'social democratic' or 'reformist socialist' view shared by Corbyn and Sultana and their supporters.
Socialism is not a fairer management of the capitalist economy and the capitalist state.
Socialism is a stateless, classless society.
Is the present capitalist 'state' neutral, or an instrument of class rule? Can it be used to transition from capitalism to socialism, or does it have to be overthrown?
How do we deal with the present capitalist state? Can it be reformed, or does it have to be completely taken apart?
What do we do about the repressive capitalist state with its increasing suppressing of dissent and protest, and its increasing authoritarianism? What about the monarchy, the House of Lords, the police, army, secret services and other forms of repression?
What about elections and representation?
The aim of Marxists should be to abolish capitalism, not to manage it.
The meeting was on 13 October 2025. It was chaired by Soraya Lawrence.
