2S11 Bletchley ➡ Bedford | On-time
A single activation at this level crossing on a bendy and moderately-busy road just outside of Stewartby near Bedford, featuring one of London North Western Railway's ex-Northern Class 150 'sprinters' re-introduced to the line after the woes of the Class 230 'D-trains' and their maintainers going into administration in late 2022. Rather unusually, the crossing wasn't lowered until this train was nearly stopped at the closest signal to it - the 'protecting signal' - most likely as a way of telling the driver to proceed cautiously due to a minor problem / defect further along that line towards Bedford.
These halogen bulb-type road traffic lights / wigwags are now very rare in this country, and this is one of the few crossings that remain to have them. Ironically, this line - the Marston Vale Line - is quite special in that it has as many as nine of those only crossings that still have these lights in the entire country! This particular little crossing also has an older-style alarm with a 'squished'-looking front, one of the first types of the 'Yodalarm' design, and this variant is also very rare to find at crossings nowadays. It doesn't look nearly as weathered as other examples, as it was likely kept fresh from an older batch upon installation here. This is the alarm that you can hear up close in this video - and you can see it in an end of video picture.
