Lot of progress on basement bathroom installation. Just today completed shower ( 36 inch by 36 inch standing shower pan ) installation. Thanks to many Canadians around Peterborough including my neighbours and staff at Home Depot who supported me. Next up is bracing the floor joists for drywall on ceiling of the bathroom and water barrier installation, then strapping and leveling of floor and proceed with installation of toilet seat.
Electrical work seems simple but there are many many code requirements which is why every step of the way I sought help from a licensed electrician who guided me all the way and I did all electrical work by myself but asked his support on connection to the the main breaker panel. It is better to learn from pros than trying by urself and make mistakes again and again.
It is indeed test of patience to build bathroom since of two main reasons. One is that it is one of the most multi-disciplinary work, so knowing many many different things and sequence them what needs to be done before the other eg insulating the pipes near rim joist and read there external surface temperature to assure above freezing temperature operation is indispensable to getting everything right the first time. Second is that it’s a lot of work within small space and that demands extreme precision entailing highest level of patience invoking deep meditation.
The exhaust ducting both for bathroom and laundry machine dryer is 4 inches diameter. I was nervous since I brought in the duct of exhaust for dryer 8 feet horizontally inside and about 4 feet fall to meet the dryer exhaust pipe with two 90 degree bends. The standard per many experts I consulted is 25 feet ( taking into account 5 feet of head loss per each 90 degree bend in 4 inch duct) which made my case close of about 22 feet equivalent of straight run of 4 inch duct. All went well and dryer is exhausting air outside. The 4 inch holes for installation of louvered outlet externally on the rim joist from outside the house in minus freezing temperature standing on snow with corded hammer drill mounted with 4 and 1/4 inch hole saw was quite an experience. Inorder to reduce cutting torque and recoil on my arms from hammer drill I have used about 8 holes of half inch drill bit with separate cordless drill to drill around periphery of the 4 and quarter inch hole. The duct screwed with the louver outlet just made it in which I have to seal outside with silicone and inside with spray foam which expands itself.
So it’s a challenge to install the bathroom since in a small space there is lot of work. It is claustrophobic which not many people can perform with level of safety it demands.
Now I am have jumped from amateur plumber in training to junior plumber in training. Still a long way from being a plumber. But engineering background of multiple disciplines help understand and predict both systemic process and personal safety risk.Cheers!
