Please enjoy my narrative of the first week of my first travel PT contract. Being a new grad (in any field) is a difficult task because you are transitioning from being in school for so so many years to finally working in the real world. Let's just say.. doing so during a world wide pandemic, especially in the healthcare field, has put quite the spin on things. My first week has come with many challenges and I've had to adapt real quick! It has been a wonderful learning experience and I'm so very thankful for all the amazing therapists that have been there to help me through it. I'm excited to gain more confidence each day and provide the best patient care as I possibly can! :)
Disclaimer!! In this video, I discuss patient stories. BUT never fear! I do not use any patient identifiers therefore I maintain HIPAA policies. A reason why I am telling you these stories, besides the fact they can be interesting to listen to, is that I want to educate PT students and current clinicians (who have never been in a SNF) about what it is like to work in a SNF. It's almost impossible to get clinical experience in all the PT settings during school. Foe example, I wanted to learn more about a PT's life working in a SNF, but I was unable to land a clinical experience during school, so because of this I have no clinical experience prior to this job in a SNF (besides a little bit of inpatient rehab). But that did not stop me from going after something I want to try. How will I know if a SNF is a good fit for me if I don't put myself in new, uncomfortable situations? I believe a new grad PT can go into almost any setting right out of school WITH good mentorship. I am lucky to have co-workers of other therapy disciplines who have been extremely helpful! You may hear a lot of people tell you not to go into travel PT as a new grad because you won't have any mentorship. Although this can be the case at times depending on the contract you choose, you can easily find a contract at a facility that will provide you with great mentorship. You just have to look and ask those questions during the interview before accepting a job position!
So, with that being said, please enjoy this episode of my life as a new grad travel PT in a SNF! It has been quite the rollercoaster ride already and I am more than pleased to share my experience with you all. :)
