The subsequent Fourth Ballade by Chopin was downright brilliant in atmosphere: a nearly unparalleled poetic beauty poured over the audience, listening breathlessly—so subtle in sound and color that paradise on earth may have revealed itself for a brief moment, and the listeners, thanks in part to the magnificent build-up once again, sat there completely captivated.

Because captivating—that is something Soerjadi can do, for those who look through the smoke and light effects: with a perfect balance between right and left hand, he manages to put a depth into his playing that I rarely hear. “He paints a layered stage landscape,” I wrote last year.

And once again, it was as if you were looking into a miniature theatre or at a kaleidoscope: again and again you discern new depths and distances, in which the different voices—roughly bass, middle voice, and melody—continue to find new relationships and shapes.
