“Orchestral, on the other hand, was certainly the first movement of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony—again such an unexpected choice, yet one that worked out very well. Before we moved on to the more popular part after the interval (plenty of film music, which the piano master is so fond of), a solid tribute was paid to the pioneers of the piano. Beethoven sounded full, the sparks were flying, and the piano mechanism could hardly keep up with Soerjadi’s superb speed. Amusingly so, because another pianist might well have made concessions to the tempo, but not Soerjadi—he identifies too strongly with the composer and his work, a quality that always wins me over. His phenomenal grasp of the large-scale structure, as well as his use of color, is masterly, making you almost see the orchestra before your eyes, although the “oboe solo” might perhaps have been rendered with a touch more stillness.”
