Oxwich Kayak competition
Sea fishing UK
This weekend was Oxwich.
Myself and Kevin Spicer met at the campsite called Gower Farm, the official campsite of the event. I travelled from Eastbourne with my dad on the Friday and the traffic was rather horrendous but we eventually arrived about 8pm.
We set up camp rather quickly and myself and my dad decided to go In Search of a takeaway. This failed miserably, 9 miles drive to the mumbles resulted in only a Tesco express being open and dinner being some crisps and chocolate. If any underground kebab shops are open after 8pm, let me know for next year.
Saturday morning was a relatively early start and we left camp around 7:30AM. The car park at Oxwich Bay cost £6 all day and was right by the beach. We both set up our kayaks and I made up some special drop shot rigs. I hadn’t prepared for this comp one bit, I had been so busy the days leading up I had simply ran out of time. I tried my best to find the smallest hooks I could but only size 1 hooks could be found. Next time I will prepare more.
The sea was ok. A large swell but not many breakers so it was certainly good to go out. I knew if I did end up in the drink a safety boat would be with me very quickly or another kayaker willing to help.
We had a safety briefing at 9:15am and we were in the water by 9:30. My first port of call was to find the wreck. My fish finder battery kept turning off so this was made tricky but I located it easily enough. I found some sand and anchored up. Letting out anchor warp to get my nearer onto the wreck.
10am came around and rods were placed in the water. I had bites from the off landing a poor cod, pouting and blenny in rather quick succession. Sadly the pout were hard to get through. The tide was on the ebb and the water was becoming shallower and for me bites slowed down. I decided to give the centre bay a go to try for plaice, ray, dogfish, hound or just about anything that would take a bait.
I found 28ft of water and decided this would do. In the 3 hours at this point I had 3 dogfish a smoothound and lost 2 other fish.
The swell and chop by midday wasn’t good and at times a breaker would come over the kayak taking my bait with it I had prepeared at the side of me.
15:00pm came around and it was time to head in. I saw 2 dolphins near me which was a lovely sight. I trolled my favourite bass lure to the beach and didn’t get one sniff.
I checked in my catches and prayed I had maybe got within the top 15. I think 76 kayak anglers were out.
7th place positioned for a prize and I had one point less than him, so I either finished 8th or at least top 10. I was chuffed with this considering I had never fished Oxwich before and I hadn’t prepared as well as I should (making my drop shot rigs up in the Oxwich car park that morning )
A huge thanks to all who made this possible and well done to all the other anglers who went out and caught fish. It was a difficult days fishing made harder with tricky wind. It was hugely enjoyable and the hogroast at camp sealed the deal.
Absolutely will be returning!!!
