Technical Talk 2 on “Elizabeth Line – mind the gap! Engineering the parts that make the line unique.” by Julian Birbeck
The Elizabeth Line defied expectations by winning the UK’s leading architectural award, the Stirling Prize, in October 2024. It challenged traditional perceptions of what constitutes ‘architecture’. Notably, the prize was awarded not to a specific station, but to the ‘common components’ package that gives the subterranean line in central London its unique identity.
This talk provides an overview of the design philosophy and technical challenges involved in delivering the common components package, and highlights the crucial role that structural engineers played in realizing this vision.
Julian Birbeck

Over the past decade, he has specialised in facades and secondary structures. He is passionate about promoting structural engineering beyond its traditional boundaries.
