#YinYoga is an intense and profound practice that balances emotions, stimulates the vital energy of the meridians (''Nadis'') and organs, revitalizes the body, calms and prepares the mind for meditation.
It contrasts and complements more dynamic yoga styles - ''yang'' - such as ashtanga or iyengar yoga which focus on creating internal heat, stretching and contraction of muscles (i.e. our elastic tissues). The yin practice instead focuses on connective tissues, deeper and more rigid tissues such as fascia, ligaments, tendons and joints.
In a sequence of Yin yoga the positions ('Asana') are passive and static, and kept longer (on average, between 3 and 5 minutes) while maintaining a deep and conscious breathing.
The aim of the practice is to relax the muscles (elastic tissues) and stimulate the connective tissues by applying optimal tension. In this way the tissue stretches, strengthens and opens slowly, recovering and increasing the flexibility and movement capacity of the whole body.
There are three fundamental principles in the Yin practice:
Position yourself gradually until you reach the optimal tension point.
Remain still. Once you have found the optimal tension point, you should remain calm and still in the position. Obviously you can move if you feel pain and are trying too hard to maintain the pose!
Maintain each asana for a long time. Yin Yoga is a mind training to calm and not reaction, we work with patience.
