Trump Said Iran's Nuclear Program Was Obliterated — Why Are We Threatening to Strike It Again?

In July, Donald Trump told the American people — repeatedly, enthusiastically, with the kind of superlative language he reserves for things he wants people to believe completely — that the United States had totally obliterated Iran's nuclear program. Obliterated. Virtually obliterated. Completely obliterated. Those gorgeous B2 bombers flew in. They wiped it out. He watched from the situation room. It happened so fast. The word was obliterated.

Now — less than a year later — the same president is weighing limited US military strikes on Iran to pressure the country into dismantling its nuclear program as talks continue in Geneva.

Let that contradiction sit for a moment.

If the nuclear program was totally obliterated in July — and Trump said it was, multiple times, in his own words, on camera — then there is no nuclear program left to pressure Iran into dismantling. You cannot dismantle what has already been obliterated. You cannot threaten to strike a program that was wiped out by gorgeous B2 bombers several months ago.

And if Iran still has a nuclear program capable enough that the United States is now considering military action to stop it — then it was not obliterated in July. Not totally. Not virtually. Not by any definition of the word obliterated that is consistent with its actual meaning.

Both things cannot be true. Either the program was obliterated and there is nothing left to threaten strikes over, or the program was not obliterated and the statements made in July were false. Those are the only two options available.

MAGA — this is a direct question. Are you genuinely believing that Iran's nuclear program was completely obliterated AND that we now need to conduct additional military strikes because their nuclear program was not completely obliterated? Are both of those things simultaneously true in the framework you are working with? Because they cannot be. Not in this reality. Not in any reality.

Pick a narrative. Just one. And then explain how it is consistent with the other thing that was said.
