In this video, I explore the rise of anti-Russian sentiment online and in mainstream media, and examine what I describe as the “symptoms” of modern Russophobia.

Over the past few years, hostility toward Russia — and toward ordinary people connected to Russia — has become increasingly normalised. In this video, I break down some of the patterns I’ve observed:

• The urge to post negative comments on anything related to Russia
• The belief that there is only one “real Russia” — defined purely by poverty or repression
• The assumption that any neutral or positive mention of Russia must be propaganda
• The tendency to consume constant anti-Russian media while claiming expertise on the country
• Online hostility toward athletes, creators, or even fictional characters connected to Russia

I discuss why this mindset is troubling, how social media amplifies it, and why nuance matters when talking about any country — including Russia.

As always, this isn’t filmed in a studio.

I start at Novokuznetskaya metro station in central Moscow, walk across Bolshoy Ustinsky Bridge with views along the Moskva River, and look toward one of Stalin’s famous Seven Sisters skyscrapers. We continue along the river toward Red Square, before taking the tram up Yauzsky and Pokrovsky Boulevards and finishing at Chistye Prudy.

Along the way, I share my perspective as someone who has lived in Russia for years and who regularly sees the online reaction to even the most ordinary footage of life here.

This video is not about defending governments. It’s about questioning collective narratives, emotional reactions, and the dangers of turning criticism into blanket hostility toward a country and its people.
