How to Get Out of Debt

And we can't look to our government for help or as an example-- because the USA is nearly $18,000,000,000,000 in the red as of this moment-- yes, that's right, $18 trillion in debt! This morning we are discussing debt as the bondage that leads to the death of our souls. But God is in the business of restoring souls-- so.we will discuss how we can deal with the deceptions of the so-called "Good Life" that gets us in debt and some specific ways we can get "debt-free "

First, our mindset must change: the Apostle Paul teaches us in Romans 13:8 to, "Owe No Man," and our freedom from bondage enables us to enjoy the Abundant Life. Psalm 107:10-16 describes situations in life that keep us in bondage and how we become prisoners of debt-- and the darkness that comes with debt prevents us from enjoying the light of freedom.

Christ Jesus teaches us in the Parable of the Sower (Mark 4) that the deceitfulness of riches, the pride of life, the delight of our eyes-- i.e., the lust of the flesh, keep us in bondage and hinder us from enjoying the freedom available to us when we live the Abundant Life that Jesus came to earth to give us. How did we get in debt? Likely it was because we had a "gimme this," "gimme that" attitude that led us down a primrose path. We need to retrace our steps and analyze what got us into the "debt trap"-- and keeps us there. Looking around us, we may see ourselves in new cars, big homes, a big truck, season tickets to our favorite college football games, a 60 inch TV, maybe a boat, motorcycle, 3-wheeler, 4-wheeler-- and a country club membership. We spend a lot of our hard-earned money on expensive clothes and jewelry; we eat out a lot-- and order expensive entrees; And let's not forget our need for vacations and travel excursions. All of this is fine if we can afford it. We seem to be always going shopping-- shopping for what? The debit card is a good one to use instead of a credit card when we go shopping. Even the interest expense on debt is a trap. If we decide today to budget, manage and retire debt, and stay within our spending limits-- and that we won't charge another thing, we have made a good start.
