SANTA MONICA, CA — On Saturday, July 5, 2025, The Beach Club in Santa Monica held its annual Fourth of July weekend fireworks display, launching colorful bursts over the Pacific despite public outcry and a citywide ban on fireworks.
Santa Monica Closeup observed the event from Palisades Park, where dozens of neighbors gathered along the bluffs to watch the show. As fireworks illuminated the coastline, many spectators looked on with awe—while others expressed concern over the timing and location.
According to a report by the Daily Mail, the private club circumvented Santa Monica’s ban by securing a fireworks permit through the Los Angeles Fire Department, launching from a parking lot just across the city border. This allowed the aerial display to take place over Santa Monica beaches and a protected habitat restoration zone, an area marked with signage urging the public to keep off.
The Beach Club’s proximity to the Palisades Fire burn scar—where over 23,000 acres were scorched in January—has intensified criticism. Environmental advocates, fire survivors, and local officials have called the display irresponsible, citing ongoing wildfire recovery and the area's vulnerability to fire risk.
In contrast, the City of Pasadena opted to cancel its traditional Rose Bowl fireworks this year, replacing them with a drone light show out of respect for fire-related safety concerns following the Eaton Fire earlier this year, Daily Mail also reported.
As the crowd at Palisades Park quietly dispersed following the finale, the debate over fire safety, environmental protection, and private privilege continued to smolder.

Santa Monica Closeup will continue monitoring community reactions, environmental concerns, and any official responses related to fireworks activity along the Westside shoreline.
