𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗠 𝗗𝗔𝗠𝗔𝗚𝗘 𝗘𝗠𝗘𝗥𝗚𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗬 𝗥𝗘𝗣𝗔𝗜𝗥𝗦: Crews Begin Clearing Santa Monica Canyon Flood Channel

Описание: On Friday, February 20, 2026, crews from Los Angeles County Public Works began emergency debris-removal operations inside the Santa Monica Canyon Flood Control Channel following storm-related damage earlier this week that displaced sections of the channel’s concrete lining.

The work is part of an ongoing response to the February 16 storm event, which caused portions of the channel’s aging concrete overlay—originally installed in the 1970s—to break apart and accumulate downstream near Channel Lane, reducing the channel’s effective stormwater capacity.

County crews staged equipment along nearby residential streets, including a Gradall XL5100 wheeled excavator positioned at an upstream access point. The machine’s telescoping boom allowed operators to lower a bucket attachment over the channel wall and into the concrete-lined floodway below, where broken slabs and debris had collected.

Workers wearing high-visibility safety vests, hard hats, gloves, and protective eyewear were observed coordinating operations from both the street level and within the channel itself. Traffic cones and caution tape were placed along the curb line to delineate the work zone and maintain separation between heavy equipment and passing vehicles.

A series of Los Angeles County Public Works dump trucks and utility vehicles were also staged along Amalfi Drive in preparation for hauling material from the site. According to project materials distributed to residents, approximately 40 truckloads of broken concrete and debris are expected to be removed during the operation, with up to 8–10 truckloads potentially leaving the area per day.

Crews are working daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the emergency repair effort anticipated to take approximately four to five weeks, depending on field conditions. Disposal trucks are expected to stage in a nearby beach parking lot along Pacific Coast Highway to minimize congestion on residential streets.

The debris-removal work is intended to restore safe stormwater flow through the channel and reduce the risk of flooding to adjacent homes and infrastructure in advance of future rainfall events.
