Heavy rainfall on the night of March 12 led to water logging in several parts of Siliguri, creating difficulties for residents and commuters across the city. Areas such as Shaktigarh, Bidhan Market, Khalpara, Milanpally, Debashish Colony (Ward No. 24), and the Kanchenjunga Stadium area reported flooded streets after drains overflowed during the intense downpour. In several locations, water levels rose significantly, making it difficult for vehicles to move and forcing many people to walk through waterlogged roads.
Many residents shared videos and visuals on social media showing flooded streets and raising concerns about drainage infrastructure and urban planning in the city. Two-wheelers reportedly struggled to move through submerged roads, while visibility issues during the heavy rain created additional risks for commuters.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the sudden change in weather conditions is linked to a cyclonic circulation over Bangladesh and adjoining Gangetic West Bengal, along with increased moisture from the Bay of Bengal. The weather department has also indicated the possibility of similar conditions across parts of North Bengal, including Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri districts, over the next few days.
Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious during periods of intense rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds, and to avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather conditions.
