After remaining incomplete for nearly 12 years, the Kurseong Ropeway Project is back in the spotlight.
The Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) has floated a new 30-year concession tender on 25 February 2026 to revive the passenger ropeway between Giddha Pahar and Rohini Tourist Complex. Originally announced in 2014 as a ₹16 crore tourism project, the ropeway was expected to be completed in just 18 months. But more than a decade later, the towers still stand unfinished.
In this video, The Cord examines the new tender document, the concession model, financial structure, safety conditions, and the larger questions surrounding the project.
Is this finally a serious revival attempt?
Or is it a late corrective step after years of delay and public pressure?
We break down the key issues:
What the 30-year concession model actually means
Why the project is being handed over “as-is-where-is” to a private bidder
Whether completing the remaining work in just 12 months is realistic
The concerns around old ropeway cables and safety certification
The economics of ticket pricing and tourism viability
Pending financial claims from the previous contractor
And why public transparency and accountability will now be crucial
If completed successfully, the ropeway could boost tourism in Kurseong, create local economic opportunities, and connect the Darjeeling Hills with the plains in a new way. But the real test will be execution, safety, and financial viability.
At The Cord, we will continue tracking every development in this project — because infrastructure is not just about construction, it is about governance, accountability, and public trust.
