This was the massive kickoff to New Zealand's premier drag racing event – the IHRA NZ Nationals – with qualifying runs setting the stage for Sunday's eliminations. Gates opened bright and early at 7:30am, race entry from 7:30-9am (spectator entry $20, kids under 12 free), and the strip was alive with high-powered machines dialing in for the big show.
I was there soaking it all in from the stands and trackside – capturing the raw adrenaline of brutal launches, smoky burnouts, massive wheelies (like that epic one in the thumbnail!), and quarter-mile battles from doorslammers, boosted builds, V8 monsters, and more. Pure Kiwi drag racing chaos
