With a recent executive order from President Trump's, the race to the bottom of the ocean has begun.
Mining companies are looking to exploit the wealth of metals, just sitting on the seabed. These rock nodules are rich in materials like cobalt, nickel, copper and lithium, which are needed in modern green technologies like batteries and wind farms.
At first glance the type of mining appears to be a no-brainer, causing considerably less damage environmentally and ethically than traditional land-based mining.
However, the mining is being done in internationally protected waters and there is a considerable impact on the sealife that relies on these nodules. We also don't yet know the impact that the mining will have on the wider ecosystem. It could potentially be quite deviating.
With the US seemingly going against international agreement, geopolitical tensions are rising. Ambitions of countries like the US and China to control and profit from the distribution of these metals are threatening to spark mass industrial mining of these sites with no workable regulations in place to protect the sites or the animals that rely on them.
