Around 1960, The Egyptian monument, Abu Simbel, was at risk of being lost forever. Construction of the Aswan High Dam was under way, which would cause mass flooding of areas further down the Nile.
In the end a large group of nations got together to raise money to save Abu Simbel and many other ancient monuments and temples along this stretch of the Nile. The project cost around $45m, which in todays money translates to around £415,000,000 in todays money.
The solution? To cut the temple up in to small pieces and move it to higher ground, along with construction of a mountain to inset the temples into. It's hard to believe that they were able to pull off this absolutely massive engineering feat, but unbelievably they did. This is the story of how they did it.
