The Spirit is the supply for everything we need for our mission. The Spirit (1) convicts the world, (2) guides us into all the truth, and (3) glorifies the Son.
This sermon explores Jesus’ final discourses with His disciples in John 16:4-15. As Jesus prepares to depart, He ensures His followers are not left ill-equipped or unprepared for the mission ahead. While the disciples were initially overwhelmed with sorrow at the thought of His leaving, Jesus reveals the "nevertheless" of the Gospel: it is actually to their advantage that He goes away so that the Helper, the Holy Spirit, may come.
The core message of this teaching is that the Holy Spirit is our total supply for everything we need for the mission God has assigned to us. We are not lacking any tool or resource because the Spirit provides a full and perfect supply. Pastor Steven breaks down this "supply of the Spirit" into three primary roles:
1. The Spirit Convicts the World
The Spirit’s arrival marks a shift where He begins to convict the unbelieving world concerning sin, righteousness, and judgment.
• Concerning Sin: The Spirit convicts the world of the chief sin—the rejection of the Son of God and His Word. This conviction is essential because a person who does not see themselves as a sinner will never seek a Savior; thus, the Spirit drives us toward the forgiveness found in Christ.
• Concerning Righteousness: Once we recognize our "unclean" state, the Spirit reveals that true righteousness cannot be achieved through our own merit but only through the finished work of Jesus. Because Jesus ascended to the Father, His sacrifice was accepted, proving He is the source of our righteousness.
• Concerning Judgment: The Spirit declares that the ruler of this world (Satan) is judged and defeated. Furthermore, through the cross, God is shown to be both the "just and the justifier," satisfying the requirements of holy judgment while offering grace to believers.
2. The Spirit Guides Us Into All The Truth
Jesus explains that the disciples could not "bear" everything at once, but the Spirit of Truth would guide them into all "the truth".
• This guidance specifically refers to the truth of Jesus’ teachings and the Kingdom of God.
• The Spirit empowered the disciples to record these truths, resulting in the completion of the New Testament canon, which serves to equip believers for every good work.
• Today, the Spirit continues to illuminate our minds, helping us apply the completed Word of God to our daily lives and decisions.
3. The Spirit Glorifies the Son
The Spirit does not speak on His own authority or seek His own glory; rather, He points us directly to Jesus Christ.
• By indwelling believers, the Spirit helps us move past our personal grief and sorrow to see the exalted glory of the Son.
• The mission of making disciples ultimately exists for the glory of God, and the Spirit ensures this goal is met by taking what belongs to the Son—which originally comes from the Father—and declaring it to us.
Conclusion: We do not have to fear missing out on God’s plan or being unable to complete our task. Through the conviction of the world, guidance into truth, and the glorification of Jesus, the Holy Spirit keeps the mission on track. Whether you are facing a "cold windy day" in your soul or feel ill-equipped for your calling, remember that the Spirit is the supply for everything you need.
