As a doctor, this recent ruling by the Delhi High Court, which temporarily allows a company to sell its existing stock of beverages branded with a form of "ORS" despite the FSSAI's ban on the term for non-WHO compliant products, warrants careful attention.
The core issue remains: True Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) follows a specific World Health Organization (WHO) formulation—low-sugar and with a precise balance of salts and glucose—critical for treating dehydration, especially in children with diarrhea.
Products that use "ORS" in their branding but contain high sugar levels are not the same. They can be misleading and may worsen dehydration, particularly in vulnerable patients.
My takeaway for everyone:
• Always read the label: If you need ORS for illness, look for the phrase "WHO recommended formula" or check that the product is a recognized, true ORS as per medical guidelines.
• Don't confuse general electrolyte drinks with medical ORS: For rehydration during illness, the specific WHO formulation is essential.
Patient safety and clarity on medication/treatment labels must be our priority. This legal discussion should not confuse the public about the difference between a medical necessity and a general beverage.
