In an alternate world, none of the new Grey Warden Recruits survive the Joining. Alistair is the last of Ferelden's Grey Wardens. The Blight has reached Denerim and the Archdemon commands for the death of the last Grey Warden.
The Alpha Vanguard has arrived in the Elven Alienage. The destruction of the city is going well. The Darkspawn are pushing deeper into Denerim with every minute. The elves plan to defend their families and their sacred tree from the invasion. It is foolhardy as the elves cannot compete against the tenacity and skill of the Darkspawn.
