In today’s Brushstrokes & Backstories, I’m creating a cute sketchbook spread with my favorite Arrtx paint markers while reminiscing about a very specific Gen-X rite of passage: going to The Rocky Horror Picture Show as a teenager.
If you were there, you already know.
If you weren’t, imagine this:
midnight showings and questionable decisions
discovering identity, queerness, and rebellion in a movie theater
finding community long before algorithms told you who you were
and realizing it was okay to be strange, theatrical, and a little unhinged
As I draw, I talk about what Rocky Horror meant to me growing up Gen-X, why those nights felt so important, and how subcultures like that helped so many of us survive adolescence.
This video is part art process, part memory lane, and part love letter to weird teens who needed a place to belong.
This episode is part of my Brushstrokes & Backstories series, where I pair art with personal memories and cultural moments that shaped me, from growing up Gen-X to finding creativity before the internet. If you enjoy nostalgic storytelling alongside art, you might also like my other Gen-X themed episodes.
If Rocky Horror was part of your teen years too, tell me your story below.
