In today’s Inside the Artist’s Head, I’m adding final details to an alcohol marker piece and opening up about a part of the creative journey we don’t talk about enough: what happens when grief takes your art away.
So many people assume creativity becomes a magical outlet during loss, but for many of us, it doesn’t. For months (or longer), the ability to draw, paint, or create at all can completely shut down. I share my own experience with this, how grief affected my art practice, and the truth I wish someone had told me earlier:
Not creating during grief is normal.
It’s not a failure.
It’s not a lack of strength.
It’s your nervous system protecting you.
If you’ve ever felt guilty for not being able to create through heartbreak, you’re not alone, and you’re not broken.
Share your own experience with creating (or not creating) through grief.
Hey friends! If you’re new here, I’m Shannan, the artist and illustrator behind Hippie Dark Arts. Here I share my creative process, painting, sketchbooks, supplies I love, and the stories that shape my art and life. If you enjoy intuitive creating, art with heart, gen-x nostalgia, and a little geek on the side, you’re in the right place.
