Spanish authorities have carried out their largest-ever maritime cocaine seizure, intercepting a merchant vessel carrying an estimated 10 tonnes of cocaine hidden inside salt cargo off the Canary Islands.
Footage released by police shows officers boarding the ship, arresting the crew and uncovering large bales of cocaine concealed inside shipping containers.
The operation followed a long-running investigation into a multinational drug trafficking network suspected of moving large quantities of cocaine from South America to Europe. According to Spain’s National Police, the vessel departed from Brazil and was identified as a key link in the smuggling route.
The bust, dubbed Operation White Tide, involved coordinated efforts by Spanish police, Brazilian federal authorities, the US Drug Enforcement Administration, the UK’s National Crime Agency, and agencies from France and Portugal.
