The Catholick belief abuin a’ things he maun secure:
The whilk unless he halily haud, and keep unfiled aye,
But dout he sall eternally be shent and cast away.

The Catholick belief is this: ae God we worship ane,
In Trinitie, and Trinitie in Unitie alane;
Sae that the Persons we confound na mair nor mix the Three,
Nor rive the single Substance hale in pairts dividit be.

Ae Person o the Faither is, anither o the Sonne,
Anither proper o the Haly Ghaist, and He alane is One.
O Faither, Sonne, and Haly Ghaist, ae Godheid still abides,
Ae glorie coeternal aye, ae Majestie besides.

Sic as the Faither is, sic is the Sonne in ilka degree,
And sic we leal believe the Haly Ghaist to be.
Uncreate is the Faither, and uncreate the Sonne,
The Haly Ghaist uncreate is — uncreate ilka ane.

Unfathom’d is the Faither, unfathom’d is the Sonne,
Unfathom’d is the Haly Ghaist — yet no three sic, but One.
Eternal is the Faither, eternal is the Sonne,
And sic eternal is the Ghaist — eternal ilka ane.

And yet though ilka ane eternal truly we confess,
There’s but ae Eternal, no three eternals, ne’er the less.
Sae neither three unfathom’d, nor three uncreate we see,
But ane unfathom’d only, ane uncreate to be.

Almichty is the Faither, almichty is the Sonne,
Almichty is the Haly Ghaist — almichty ilka ane.
And yet though ilka ane be almichty, as we say,
There’s but ae Almichty, no three in ony way.

The Faither God is, God the Sonne, God Haly Ghaist alswa,
Yet no three Gods are there at a’, but ae God, and nae mair ava.
Sae Lord the Faither is, and Lord the Sonne is He,
And Lord the Haly Ghaist — yet not three Lords, but ae we see.

For as be Christian veritie we’re compell’d to grant and own
Ilk Person by Himsel be God and Lord alane,
Sae Catholick religioun aye forbids us say
That three be Gods, or three be Lords in ony gate or way.

O nane the Faither is begot, nor made, nor create wrought,
The Sonne is o the Faither, no made nor create, but got.
The Haly Ghaist is o them baith, o Faither and o Sonne,
No made, nor create, nor begot — but doth proceed alane.

Sae ae Faither we haud, no three; ae Sonne, no three we name;
Ae Haly Ghaist alane, no three o that same Name.
Nane in this Trinitie afore, nor eftir ither is,
Nae greater nor nae less amang them — equal aye in blis.

But ilka ane amang the Three, coeternal aye they be,
And coequal ilka ane, in full equalitie:
Sae Unitie in Trinitie, as said afore we sing,
And Trinitie in Unitie, in a’ things worshipping.

This faith anent the Trinitie maun stedfastly endure.
And needfu to eternal life it is, that ilka wight
The incarnatioun o our Lord believe aricht.

For this the richt belief is, that we believe and ken
That Christ our Lord, God’s ain dear Sonne, is God and Man.
God o His Faither’s substance, begot or e’er began,
And o His mither’s substance born, in warld a vera Man.

Baith perfect God and perfect Man, ae Jesus Christ in One,
Wi reasonable saul and flesh subsistin as ae Sonne;
As touching Godheid equal wi His Faither high is He,
As touching Manheid lower than His Faither in degree.

Wha though He be vera God, and vera Man alswa,
Yet ae Christ only is He still, no twa persons at a’.
No by conversion o the Godheid into flesh o man,
But by the taking Manheid til God, this union first began.

A’ ane, no by confounding o the substances in One,
But by the Unitie that bides in ae Person alone.
For as the saul and flesh mak ane man, as we confess,
Sae God and Man in ae Person, ae Christ is nane the less.

Wha suffer’d for to saif us a’, til hell He did descend,
The third day raise frae deid again, to Heav’n did He ascend.
He sits at God the Faither’s richt hand, almichty there,
Frae thence to judge the quick and deid, again He shall repair.

At Whase return a’ men sall rise, wi bodies new restor’d,
And o their ain deeds they sall gie account unto the Lord.
They that hae dune weel sall gang til life eternal aye,
They that hae dune ill til fire eternal pass away.

This is the Catholick belief: wha faithfully disna own
The same, but dout, he canna be to salvatioun broucht nor known.
Til Faither, Sonne, and Haly Ghaist be glorie evermair,
As was i’ the beginnin, is now, and aye sall be, for evermair.
