ElvenDale at Alfred Fest in Wantage, Oxfordshire, the birthplace of Alfred the Great.
We spent the day displaying, demonstrating and discussing a range of Viking Age instruments, and performed a rendition of the Anglo Saxon poem 'Wulf and Ædwacer'.
The Poem:
It is as if my folk have been handed prey.
They will rip him to shreds if he comes to their troop.
We are apart.
"Wulf is on an island, I on another.
A fastness, that island, surrounded by fens.
Fierce men roam there,
They will slaughter him if he comes to their troop.
We are apart.
How I have grieved for my Wulf’s far wandering.
When rain lashed the earth and I sat apart weeping,
When the bold warrior took me in his arms,
I seethed with desire and yet with such hatred.
Wulf, my Wulf, my yearning for you
And your seldom coming have caused my sickness,
My mourning heart, not mere starvation.
Can you hear, Eadwacer? A wolf bears our wretched welp to the woods.
Men easily sever that which was never secure,
The song of us together".
