In Jonah chapter 2, we find Jonah praying from the most unexpected place imaginable — the belly of a great fish.
After running from God in chapter 1, Jonah now cries out from the depths of the sea. His prayer echoes the language of the Psalms and reflects both gratitude and tension. Jonah thanks God for rescue, even though his rescue is not yet complete. He is still inside the fish.
This raises an important question: What kind of prayer is Jonah offering?
His words sound faithful and thankful, yet something seems to be missing.
In this video we explore:
• The poetic structure of Jonah’s prayer
• Why Jonah’s language closely resembles the Psalms
• What it means that Jonah thanks God while still “mid-rescue”
• The tension between Jonah’s words and his heart
• What Jonah’s experience teaches us about God hearing us in our lowest moments
Jonah’s story reminds us that God’s mercy can reach us even when we have run far from Him, and that salvation sometimes comes in unexpected ways.
This is Part 2 of a 4-part study on the Book of Jonah.
