The character 道 (dao4) is a meaning/meaning compound consisting of 辶 (full form 辵) - chuo4 - to walk and 首 - shou3 - head. They combine into the meaning 'a way, a path, a channel'. This character is relatively famous outside of China too as its original meaning 'a way, a path, a channel' has been adopted by the school of Daoists (Taoists) to represent their main principle where 道 is considered to be 'The' way according to which everything in the world is acting and according to which people should act too. In Mandarin Chinese today the character can be found in frequent expressions like 知道 (zhi1dao4 - to know), 道理 (dao4li3 - principle, rationality, reason) 道德 (dao4de2 - morale) and also in words closer to the original meaning of the character like 軌道 (gui3dao4 - railway tracks) or 管道 (guan3dao4 - pipeline). Ancient Chinese pronunciation: d'âu. Cantonese pronunciation: tou. Japanese pronunciation: do (dau).
