情 (qing2) if translated directly means passion, feelings, affection or circumstances, but is rarely found as a standalone character in Modern Chinese. It is a morpheme in frequent words like 事情 (shi4qing2 - thing, matter), 感情 (gan3qing2 - feeling), 情況 (qing2kuang4 - situation), 情緒 (qing2xu4 - emotion). The character is a phono-semantic compound, with the left side 忄(xin1, short form for 心, when on the left side of characters) which is the heart radical, frequently representing the semantic element in characters pointing to abstract meanings having to do something with emotions and 青 qing1 on the right side, acting as the phonetic element. The meaning of 青 is blue, green, azure. It can be found as a phonetic element in a whole series of characters 清 qing1 - clear, Qing Dynasty, 請 qing3 - to ask, beg, demand , 睛 jing1 - eye, 精 jing1 - essence, spirit, vital energy, 晴 qing2 - skies clearing up. Most of these are morphemes found in very frequent words, rarely found as standalone characters. Ancient Chinese pronunciation for 情 is dziäng, Cantonese tsing, Japanese sei, dzo (ziau).
