Food Combining Guidelines:
1. Eat fruit alone
2. Minimize your sweets - eat alone or in between meals
3. Eat salads at the end of your meal
4. Avoid mixing 2+ proteins
5. Avoid mixing protein and starches
6. Avoid mixing grains and dairy
7. Avoid dairy with sour/acidic fruits
8. Avoid astringent teas during meal, ie black tea, rooibos tea, raspberry tea
9. Avoid mixing foods with opposing qualities, ex: yogurt (warm and sour) and milk (cool and sweet) - causes indigestion/gas
10. Avoid beans, raw onion, cruciferous vegetables, fried foods and heavy sweets when experiencing digestive challenges
**Avoid mixing milk/cheese with meat or fish → milk and fish can cause skin disease
The Food Players //
Fruit - Important to eat easy to digest first fruit - 20 mins to digest, don’t eat after other food! Banana and acai - 2 exceptions because less water they digest slower, ok to mix with protein smoothie, ex: pb cacao banana protein smoothie
Starches - 2-3 hours digest, middle meal. All starches mix well with one another.
Veggies are fair game Always! Starches need enzyme to alkaline the body to break it down
Protein - 3-4 hours to digest *do not combine starch and protein. You need acidic enzyme to digest protein. Nuts = protein. NEVER mix ANIMAL PROTEIN AND STARCH (our GI tracts are waaaay unhealthier than our ancestors)
Fats - ok with protein, Great with starches (not nuts) (ex: avocado or Oils on toast or in brown rice bowl)
*Remember*
Food combining comes in last when evaluating overall digestion in ayurveda. It’s most important to how you are consuming your foods, and then choosing the proper foods. Use this only when dealing with extreme digestive issues and you’ve tried the above. Incorporating the 6 tastes can bring balance to combinations
