The Sacramento County Department of Human Assistance produced this video to raise awareness and increase local participation in the CalFresh program.
CalFresh, formerly known as Food Stamps, is a supplemental nutrition program that aims to end hunger and provide access to healthier foods for low-income families or individuals. Working peole, college students, senior citizens, returning veterans -- anybody needing help -- can apply.
In Sacramento County, apply online at benefitscalwin.org or call 916-874-3100 or (209) 744-0249 for information about how to apply.
CalFresh benefits are provided in an Electronic Benefit Card (EBT) that looks like any other debit or ATM card. You can use it to purchase groceries and fresh produce at participating grocery stores and farmers markets.
More than 206,000 Sacramento County residents, including 109,000 children and 16,000 people over 50 participate in the CalFresh program. Enrollment in Sacramento County has grown by more than 36 percent in the past four years. Nationwide, a record 45 million Americans rely on CalFresh according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
