Meikle Bin is the highest point in the Kilsyth Hills and a popular hillwalk in central Scotland. But tucked away on its western slopes lies a lesser-known piece of aviation history. In January 1950, a Royal Navy Fairey Firefly crashed here in low fog, tragically claiming the lives of its two crew members.
In this video, I hike the well-marked route up Meikle Bin before detouring to the plane crash site. Part of the wing wreckage still remains scattered across the hillside, a quiet reminder of the past in what is otherwise a straightforward Scottish hillwalk.
On a clear day, the views across the Campsie Fells and beyond are superb. But it’s the story behind the wreckage that makes this walk different. A simple hike with a sobering bit of history along the way.
