I stayed at Daimaru Ryokan in Nagayu Onsen, Taketa City, Oita Prefecture.
Nagayu Onsen is a hot spring town famous throughout Japan for its high-concentration carbonated springs, located in Oita Prefecture, where many hot springs are gathered. Among them, Daimaru Ryokan is a long-established inn that represents the area.
A landmark building in the center of the hot spring town. Check in through the modest entrance that gives off a sense of history. All rooms have a great view facing the Seri River, and the open feeling makes them very comfortable. In the building, you can enjoy private baths, including Tei no Yu, named after the third proprietress, and Midori no Yu, named after the fourth proprietress.
Daimaru Onsen's hot spring water is a high-concentration carbonated spring, but the temperature of the water is high and the carbonated spring is dissolved in the water. At the appropriate temperature of about 40 degrees, there is little foaming, but the dissolved carbonated components are absorbed into the body and warm the body immediately. Furthermore, the water contains many components such as magnesium, sodium, and calcium, so even if it feels lukewarm, you will sweat in a short time and be able to fully enjoy the benefits of the hot spring.
And the Ramune Onsenkan, a drop-in hot spring run by Daimaru Onsen. This has a high-temperature indoor bath and a 32-degree open-air bath, and in the open-air bath you can enjoy the bubbles that are unique to lukewarm carbonated spring water. I visited in winter. I thought the 32-degree temperature was a little cold, but after warming up my body thoroughly in the indoor bath and sauna, the bathing sensation was like heaven. The moment you enter, it feels cold for a moment, but then you gradually feel the warmth, and you can fully enjoy the strange and comfortable bathing sensation. And the bubbles that cling to your whole body from the moment you enter are impressive. The bubbles near the water outlet are so wonderful that you have to wait for a spot in the bath during busy times. This is proof that the water at Ramune Onsenkan is so popular. I too have become completely captivated by the water at Nagayu Onsen. It is a one-of-a-kind drop-in hot spring where you can also enjoy the artistic building designed by the master of natural architecture, Terunobu Fujimori.
There are many more places to enjoy at Nagayu Onsen, such as Gani-yu, the Gozenyu, and the many public baths. I would like to visit again and enjoy the hot spring town at my leisure.
