I stayed at Oidekan, a traditional Japanese inn located in the Shiobara Onsen area of Nasushiobara City, Tochigi Prefecture.
Located in a mountain village about 20 minutes from Shiobara, the Shiobara Onsen area currently has only three remaining traditional inns. All are considered to be excellent hot spring resorts, and I had always wanted to visit them.
In particular, Oidekan is known as a member of the "Japan Association of Secluded Hot Spring Inns," a group that promotes and protects traditional hot spring resorts. The sulfurous scent wafting through the inn instantly evokes the atmosphere of a true hidden gem. The inn is famous for its "Sumino-yu" hot spring, a unique black-colored bath believed to be one of a kind in Japan. Despite containing iron, the water remains black, a characteristic found only here. The other spring, "Goshiki-yu," is said to change color depending on the weather, and is usually a beautiful emerald green. The fact that these two seemingly different springs have the same water quality is truly a natural wonder.
The ability to stay alone without any worries is a great advantage. The rooms are spacious, and both dinner and breakfast are served in the room, allowing guests to relax and enjoy the hot springs at their own pace. The meals were delicious, with many dishes that encouraged me to eat more than I intended. The morning porridge cooked with water from the Goshiki-yu spring was unforgettable. The value for money is excellent, which explains why this inn is so popular.
This is a truly valuable hot spring resort, offering not only excellent hot springs but also a comfortable and relaxing stay. I highly recommend it to everyone.
