Have you ever spent time daydreaming, zoning out, checking out or just not being present in the moment? Most of us have. Sometimes zoning out is due to boredom or thinking about a new crush or our busy 'to do' list. But sometimes- and often with trauma - zoning out is a protective brain function gone awry.
Dissociation is different than a dissociative disorder, where things like memory, identity and perceptions of reality are affected (think of amnesia, "multi-personality disorder" aka dissociative identity disorder and depersonalization disorder).
