After fighting as a frontline Kongō-class battleship from the opening blows of Pearl Harbor to the brutal night battles off Guadalcanal, IJN Kirishima vanished into Ironbottom Sound in November 1942 and became one of WWII’s most legendary lost warships — until explorers finally located her wreck roughly 50 years later. In this video, we retrace Kirishima’s wartime path and rebuild her last stand during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal: the mission, the chaos of the night engagement, the gunfire that crippled her, and the damage that forced the crew to abandon ship as she slipped under.
