After sinking in just 30 minutes during the Battle off Samar on October 25, 1944, USS St. Lo (CVE-63) became the first major U.S. warship destroyed by an organized kamikaze attack—and then vanished into the deep for 75 years.
In this video, we trace St. Lo’s rapid rise from Kaiser-built Casablanca-class escort carrier to “Taffy 3” survivor, and the moment a diving Japanese Zero ignited a chain of explosions that sent her nearly 3 miles down into the Philippine Trench.
We also follow the 2019 search led by the research vessel Petrel, using deep-sea sonar and ROV footage to confirm the wreck and reveal what the damage pattern says about her final minutes.
