10 Lovers 50 Poems - An introduction to this project to bring 50 of Thomas Hardy's poems to life

Athelhampton House and Thomas Hardy are well connected. Thomas Hardy's grandfather was born in the old gardener's cottage at Athelhampton, and as young boy through to his late teens Hardy was a visitor to the old manor house, as his father, a stonemason and bulider worked on the house. In later years Hardy acted as a mentor to the young Victorian gentleman, Alfred Cart de Lafontaine who started to restore Athelhampton, withough Hardy's steadying hand and love of old Dorset, who knows what could have happened.

Amongst our videos playlist is all about our project 'Thomas Hardy 10 Lovers 50 Poems' to show Hardy in a new light, his youthful energetic loves alongside his more traditional older and darker themes found in his writing. This series of 44 short films will be launched in May 2025, and a new short film will be premiered every couple of weeks, concluding in 2028, the centenary of Thomas Hardys death.

The series is supported by the book, 'Thomas Hardy 10 Lovers 50 Poems' written by Giles Keating, owner and custodian of Athelhampton House.
