🍼 Newborn Baby Feeding: Techniques & Management
1. Importance of Feeding
Provides nutrition, immunity, and warmth
Prevents hypoglycemia, dehydration, and infection

2. Types of Newborn Feeding
A. Breastfeeding (Preferred)
Start within 1 hour of birth
Give colostrum (first yellow milk)
Exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months
B. Expressed Breast Milk (EBM)
For preterm, sick, or poor-suck babies
Given via spoon, cup, or NG tube
C. Formula Feeding

4. Feeding Frequency
On demand feeding (8–12 times/day)
Day & night feeding
Preterm/LBW: every 2–3 hours
5. Burping Technique
After each feed
Hold baby:
Upright on shoulder
Sitting on lap
Prone on lap
Gently pat back until burp comes out
6. Management of Feeding Problems
A. Poor Suck
Check temperature & blood sugar
Stimulate baby
Use EBM via spoon/NG tube if needed
B. Vomiting/Regurgitation
Feed small amounts frequently
Ensure proper burping
Keep baby upright after feeding
C. Choking During Feed
Stop feeding immediately
Position baby upright
Clear airway if needed
D. Low Birth Weight / Preterm
Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC)
EBM preferred
Gavage feeding if required
7. Signs of Adequate Feeding
6–8 wet diapers/day
Baby active and gaining weight
Sleeps well after feed
No excessive crying
8. Hygiene & Safety
Wash hands before feeding
Clean breast and utensils
Avoid bottle feeding if possible
Do not give honey, ghutti, or water
9. When to Seek Medical Help
Baby not feeding 8 hours
Repeated vomiting
Lethargy or poor weight gain
