Animals at the Bloemfontein Zoo were left to fend for themselves after the zoo closed it’s doors in December 2019, resulting in some animals dying of starvation. This week, animal rights group, FOUR PAWS together with the SPCA and other organisations arrived at the zoo to rescue the animals still remaining in their neglected enclosures. The animals still remaining in the zoo included tigers, jackals, leopards, mountain lions and buffalo.
Upon arrival, the team found the Bengal tiger enclosure to be flooded, making access to the animals and the rescue impossible. The fire brigade was called and began a ten-hour long overnight operation to pump the water from the enclosure to give the rescuers access to the two big cats.
Veterinarians worked for two days capturing and darting the large cats, who were given medical assessments, before being placed in transport crates to be released into permanent rehabilitation centres.
The tigers and jackals were rescued by FOUR PAWS and were released into their new enclosures at the LIONSROCK rehabilitation centre in Bethlehem.
