What does surrender means? Is it having complete faith in God? Surrender to God is highly emphasized in all spiritual traditions. It’s the key to receiving God’s unlimited Grace. So what is the real meaning of Surrender to God. And how should we practice this state of surrender in our daily life? Often people on spiritual path are not sure what it means to truly surrender to God.
Swami Mukundananda gives a simple definition of surrender to God.
Oh God my faith is nowhere but in your grace. My faith is not in any of my strength, wealth, prestige, knowledge, abilities etc. My faith is in God alone. This state of mind is real surrender to God.


In this video “What is Real Surrender”, Swami Mukundananda explains in detail the condition for true surrender and a simple technique to practice surrender in our day to day life.
To explain surrender Swami Mukundananda gives the famous example of Draupadi’s surrender to Shri Krishna from the Mahabharat. When the Pandavas lost everything to Kauravas in gambling, Duryodhana ordered for Draupadi to be brought in the court. Evil Dushasana brought Draupadi. At that time Drawupadi was not surrender to God. She was relying on her 5 valiant husbands to save her. But everyone lowered their head & showing their incompetency to help her.
Then she then looked at the big Dhrama Acharyas (upholders of righteousness) Bhishma, Dronacharya, Vidur, Kripachayara , thinking they will definitely help her out. However they too did not come to her rescue. Seeing this Draupdi decided to rely on her own strength. She is one of the 5 Kanyays’s. But Dushashan had the strength of elephants & when he tugged, the cloth slipped from her teeth. At that moment her faith disappeared from everywhere and right away got focused on Shri Krishna.
She lifted her hands and screamed “Govind Drawrikavasin” & immediately the grace of God descended. And Ambar avatar took place.
Similarly when Gajraj the elephant relied on his strength to free himself from the clutches of a crocodile, God did not help, but the moment he fully surrender and cried out for God, immediately he was saved.
So true surrender is that when we internally realize oh God you alone are my strength.
Swamiji further explains real surrender is not practicing of some sadhana, but it’s a state of realization that we’re sadhan heen ( I don’t have any sadhan). But to reach this state of realization we will need to do sadhana to destroy the ego & come to terms with the fact that you have no means for our real welfare & only rely on God’s grace to save us.
To truly practice surrender to God one must adopt these two contradictory theories:
1. When performing any task in this world, from the outside, endeavor with full energy as if it’s depending on you.
2. Inside think, it’s all God’s grace.
