The song "Brothers" comes from Tempest's debut album from 1973. In this band Allan got the opportunity to play in a kind of progressive "acid rock" band. Allan soon quit (to be replaced by Ollie Halsall) but during live concerts before that he was featured in a long "spotlight" section during the song "Brothers". For historical context, this kind of guitar "etude" was preceded by Jimmy Page's "Heartbreaker" and followed by Van Halen's "Eruption".
The solo here is VERY un-Holdsworthian, although there are moments where he's leaning towards some of his maturer style. I can only guess that because his avant-garde band 'Igginbottom hadn't worked out a few years in the past, in Tempest he was trying to "behave". Although Allan would probably have never stood for this being unearthed in his lifetime, I think it's very instructive to examine a place where Allan had been, in order to demonstrate how far he had progressed in later years (I think it's inspirational, in other words).
