All hell breaks loose at the circus as millionaire Bruce Wayne and gal pal Vicki Vale witness a young boy's life shattered before their eyes.

Orphaned, Dick Grayson has nowhere to go and no one to turn to-no one but Bruce Wayne and the shadow of the Bat!

For Issue No. 2 -- Batman gasses Dick Grayson.

Alfred patches up Vicki.

Batman tosses Dick into the Batmobile, driving off.

Dick recovers quickly, and they discuss the situation.

Cops start chasing them and surround them, until Batman rockets over and onto them, laughing like a maniac all the while.

The Batmobile then engages wings, and rockets off.

Dick freaks out, and Batman slaps him, then they discuss more, including Batman wanting to train him to fight crime.

Dick finally accepts all this.

Batman’s first appearance was in Detective Comics No. 27 in 1939.

This was at the beginning of the Golden Age of Comic Books, which was from 1938 to 1956.

Batman was created by artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger.

Bill Finger said, “Batman was originally written in the style of the pulps”, and this was evident with Batman showing little remorse over killing or maiming criminals.

Batman is the alias of Bruce Wayne, a wealthy American playboy, philanthropist, and industrialist who resides in Gotham City.

Batman's origin story features him swearing vengeance against criminals after witnessing the murder of his parents, Thomas and Martha.

He trains himself physically and intellectually, crafts a bat-inspired persona, and monitors the Gotham City streets at night.

Batman was originally a ruthless vigilante who frequently killed or maimed criminals, but evolved into a character with a stringent moral code and strong sense of justice.

Batman does not have any superpowers, and relies on his intellect, fighting skills and wealth.

In 1940 Batman’s character began to soften with the introduction of his junior partner, Robin, and sales nearly doubled.

Batman first starred in two serial movies in the 1940s, Batman plus Batman and Robin.

Batman also appeared in the 1966 Batman movie, which was an adaptation of the 1960s Batman TV show, with Adam West as Batman and Burt Ward as Robin, in both the TV show and movie.

Toward the end of the 1980s, Warner Bros. began producing a series of Batman movies, beginning with 1989's Batman movie, directed by Tim Burton and starring Michael Keaton as Batman.

Burton and Keaton returned for the 1992 sequel Batman Returns, and in 1995, Joel Schumacher directed Batman Forever, with Val Kilmer as Batman.

Schumacher also directed the 1997 sequel Batman & Robin, which starred George Clooney as Batman.

Later came three Batman movies directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Christian Bale as Batman:
In 2005, Batman Begins;
In 2008, The Dark Knight; and
in 2012, The Dark Knight Rises.

The three movies are referred to as the Dark Knight trilogy, and the second of the three is considered to be one of the best superhero movies of all time.

A 2022 reboot, The Batman, was directed by Matt Reeves, and starred Robert Pattinson as Batman.
