Scottish minister George Matheson was engaged to be married, but upon finding out that he was going to go blind, his fiancé left him. He remained a bachelor the rest of his life, and some years later, upon the marriage of his sister, he penned the words to this hymn, referring to a grief that still weighed upon him. Some theologians have therefor analyzed this hymn text as a rejection of romantic love in favor of a supposedly stronger spiritual love emanating from a higher power. Perhaps it doesn't have to be an either or? True love, no matter by whom it may be shared, is the strongest thing of all. Either way, Elaine Hagenberg's stunningly gorgeous piece makes the most of these deeply felt words.
