🧊 Sólheimajökull Glacier - Located on Iceland’s stunning South Coast, Sólheimajökull is a dramatic outlet glacier that flows from the larger Mýrdalsjökull ice cap—home to the powerful and active Katla volcano. The glacier is known for its surreal combination of glowing blue ice and streaks of black volcanic ash, a reminder of Iceland’s fiery origins.
As climate change accelerates, Sólheimajökull is retreating fast, revealing an otherworldly landscape of deep crevasses, ice ridges, and meltwater lagoons. You can view it from a scenic walking trail or take a guided glacier hike across the ice for a truly immersive experience.
📍 Location: About 2 hours southeast of Reykjavík, just off Route 1
🚶♂️ Activities: Glacier hiking, photography, guided tours
🌋 Fun Fact: The ice is often marked with ash from past volcanic eruptions!
🌍 Þingvellir National Park (Thingvellir) - Þingvellir is not only a UNESCO World Heritage Site but also one of the most geologically and historically important places in Iceland. It sits in a rift valley between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates—meaning you’re literally walking between two continents!
This is also where Iceland’s first parliament, the Alþingi, was founded in 930 AD, making it one of the oldest parliamentary sites in the world. Þingvellir is part of the famous Golden Circle route and offers spectacular scenery, with crystal-clear waters, lava fields, and dramatic cliffs.
📍 Location: About 45 minutes northeast of Reykjavík
📷 Highlights: Tectonic plate rift, Alþingi site, Silfra fissure (popular for diving/snorkeling)
🧭 Fun Fact: You can dive or snorkel between continents in Silfra, a fissure filled with glacial meltwater!
Location: South Coast of Iceland
🚶♂️ Plane Wreck Hike: ~4 km (one way), flat but exposed
